Lattitude 5400 second RAM slot?

Hi there!

I have lattitude 5400 with i5-8265U and 8Gb. Recently I've tried to populate the second empty RAM slot (DIMM A) with transcend 1Rx8 8Gb stick and it worked for some time, but then the laptop failed to boot und signaled RAM error. I've tried to take the stick off the slot and insert it back, switched the sticks and so on, and finally, everything worked again for a couple of days until the next RAM error. I've tried a couple of similar transcend sticks in different combinations with the native stick and without, and every time I would get RAM error eventually.BIOS is already updated to the latest version.

Is it some kind of compatibility error, or do I have a semi-dead RAM slot and my only option is a single 16 Gb stick?

It's always best to use two matching pairs (memory) or the same manufacturer.

Example:

Dell x Dell per slot

Crucial x Crucial per slot

Kington x Kington per slot

Transcend x Transcend per slot

Hi, thank you for the response. I tried two identical Transcend sticks. They passed the RAM test at the first start and worked for some time, but at some moment in a few days, the laptop still blinked RAM error and refused to boot.

P.S. I've already done those things from the video and I could identify problems neither with RAM sticks nor with RAM slots as the error pops unpredictably with different sticks

I suspect a compatibility problem. You check the memory type and speed specifications in your Dell Product Support page - see link below)?

Dell Latitude 5400 Setup and specifications guide | Dell US

If both sticks don't meet Dell specification, I suggest you quickly return Transcend sticks to the retailer and get your money back. Most of us, purchased memory from Crucial com:

Crucial offer a very good warranty on any memory you purchase from the retailer. Crucial also has a Return policy.

Thank you for the update and good luck on your search for new memory.
