Lookup basic specs with SKU or service tag
I work in remote support for my company. My team supports thousands of field users across hundreds of projects throughout the continental US and Canada. Some of our cost centers are evaluating new Dell machines for field use. Some have older devices or devices from different manufacturers.
Is there a way to look up the basic specs in human-readable form for a Dell device through the website with just a service tag? The basic specs my team would need include the processor, hard drive, amount of RAM, and what kind of antennas are installed (wifi, bluetooth, gps).
If I go to Dell.com/support and put in the service tag then click "View Product specs" (under "Quick links" in the right-hand panel), it gives me Dell's internal part numbers. E.g., 'Y7684 : MOD,MCPHN,CMPTR,DMIC,TBLT,7220' but I have no idea what that means. There are dozens of entries like that and none of them make sense.
The Dell.com chat bot and the Dell.com "Contact Technical Support" method both stonewalled by requiring to know the name of the purchaser, their email address and phone number. I will rarely have that information.
I finally got what I needed from a Dell rep via the Apple Chat after explaining the situation! (Thank you so much for that! You guys/gals rock!) But I hate to bother them every time I want to lookup the specs for a field user and it would really slow my team down anyway.
There must be a better way to get basic specs. Keep in mind that many of our users are in remote locations, may not have internet access, and may not know what BIOS/UEFI is.
Lastly, I do have a batch file that I can run to extract this information from the OS but that's a lot of extra steps just to get basic specs.

Hello, I recently looked up my computers specs and seeing all those part numbers is overwhelming, but, at least for me, the "header" of each of section has the general "readable" info I, and hopefully you, was looking for.
Im attaching a screenshot of my specs.

Thank you TheExe! That's really quite helpful. Below is a screenshot of the Latitude tablet PC my field user was having trouble with. While my headers are significantly less verbose, your post inspired me to take a closer look. I have figured out that DCRD3 = the SSD, NYXD7 includes the RAM (and mb), and V325V = the wireless card.
Maybe there's a table somewhere that defines these codes? I can figure it out with some effort and patience, but having the essential PC specs encoded like this is enough for me to recommend against using Dell to all our district managers. Unfortunately, this type of complication adds to the time it takes for my team to support our crews out in the field.
Thanks again TheExe.
