Amazon is now a marketplace like Ebay without the auctions. It has many sellers. Always check the listing for the Sold By... info. Check the original listing now if possible. You probably purchased a used computer sold as new. It had been registered before.
I'm having this exact same problem! I'm trying to register my laptop (which is an Inspiron 3595 that I bought a few weeks ago), and I get that exact same message. Then, when I click on that link to register, one of the first things it tells me is to input information for the previous owner, even though I bought it new on Amazon! Sat., 5-29-'21, 13:40
