Serial port not reliable

I utilize my laptop for communications with microprocessor equipment but I am having issues with the com port not communicating. I get time outs or CRC errors. I have had to result to using an additional USB to Serial converter which then works flawlessly. Seems silly to add this device when a hardware device is built in.
