WD19 dock kills local network when laptop is turned off?

My WD19 dock, attached to my Latitude 5400, is connected to my local LAN with unmanged switches. When the laptop is powered off, a few minutes later, devices on the closest ethernet switches can no longer communicate. The lights on the switches are still blinking so the ports are still working.

I don't really understand it but it is easily reproducible.

  1. Plug ethernet into dock and turn off laptop.
  2. On another PC on the same network, do a continuous ping of another PC.
  3. After a few minutes, ping will fail.
  4. Fixes/workarounds:
    • Unplug Ethernet cable from dock/switch
      or
    • Turn on laptop
      or
    • Plug Ethernet cable directly into laptop instead

I have no idea what is going on. Could the dock trigger some sort of power saving feature on the switch and that somehow affects all its ports?

I have the exact same problem, but the computer and the dock are work-provided and I do not have access to do firmware upgrades.

dmbklr's solution was the only viable solution I could enact myself. I have to protect my "main" switch with a "sacrificial" one that only connects to the problematic Dell docking station!

@Phil12341234I'm glad this workaround works for you. It's at least something. I cannot believe Dell is not able to do anything about it or at least react to it.

Really shatters my confidence in buying future Dell products. Sad.

i'm having the same problem with my dell docking station but it's a D6000.   what is the solution?

I too have replicated this issue on (both brand new) WD19TB with Dell 5511 combination.

- When I checked my BIOS:  Thunderbolt is ALREADY set to no security.  WOL is already disabled.

- This occurs when laptop is completely powered off.

- Seems as though this creates a packet storm which takes down the wired network (1G Ethernet).

Need a real fix!  Or do I have a defective unit we should RMA?

My WD19TB has the same behaviour. My Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2019) is plugged in the most often and can sometimes occur when I close the laptop lid. Network recovery happens immediately if I remove the Thunderbolt cable.

I don't have my Dell XPS 15 7590 plugged in that often but it has yet to occur with that laptop. Probably just a matter of time, however.

Same behavior for me (Macbook Pro 13" 2019).

It completly kills my whole network.

Has anyone had any success? I've ended up just leaving the ethernet cable unplugged from the dock to avoid the issue but I'd naturally prefer to use the dock as intended.

I'm wondering if it could be the same issue as discussed about some USB-C Type C docks generally - https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U3421WE-Ethernet-causes-network-storm/m-p/7786590 / https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/an6lfq/pass_though_power_usb_type_c_hubs_cause_broadcast/

My company sent me the WD19 with a new Precision 5760 in late December. My network setup is a 3 node Netgear Orbi Mesh with all three nodes hardwired together. I started noticing network comm issues on both wired and wireless systems occasionally since I started using the WD19. All devices would just say they couldn't access the internet and if I tried to ping the router I would get failure messages. I could power cycle the router and satellite nodes and it would recover. Finally figured it out this week that it was the WD19 dock causing the issue after looking in the log on the router and DoS attack warnings that were coming from the inside. Right now I have dropped the WD19 down to a second switch to see if it will limit the problem. Also going to try disabling the WoLAN and other suggestions.

We have been experiencing a network event every morning for three months now and I'm just now coming across this thread.  We have 30+ users dropped from the network daily for 1-3 seconds and we've been troubleshooting with multiple vendors but thus far have not found the culprit.  Based on some of the details of our issue I restarted started to suspect our Dell docks, but this is the first time I've actually found anything online.

We're running the WD19TB's with Precision 3560's primarily.  I'll be opening a ticket with Dell today.

I just contacted support about this issue and they said they have no known reports of the problem internally.

I have exactly the same issue and confirm it's definitely an issue with the Dell Docks. As soon as I unplug the network cable from the Dock the network comes back online.

Thunderbolt --- very interesting there is some issues with using both ports so I have had to use one thunderbolt port and the other HDMI in order to use 2 displays.   (disappointing.)

How did you make out?  Another person reported NO known issues at Dell?  Of course??

I have (have had for a year) this exact problem!!!!  This docking station if simply connected without my corp laptop connected takes down my entire network and locks it up!!!  100% repeatable, all the latest firmware and software.  Can't wait to see if somebody has found the answer......just marking the thread.
