A few problems since Hardy upgrade

Question

I've had a few problems since upgrading to hardy (some time ago now). The majority I fixed by searching the ubuntu forums, but unfortunitly I am verry new to linux and some times don't know what to search for. So i was hoping someone here would be able to help me. There are four problems remaining and I've listed them bellow. The last three are pretty trivial but the first one interfers with how i use my laptop.   1) Hibernation. This is the main problem and effectivly prevents me Hibernating my Laptop.  Whenever I wake the laptop rom hibernation everything appears on the screen as if it's zoomed in. The Desktop seems to be the same resolution, I just can't see it all at once. Instead I have to move the mouse about to change which bit of the screen I view. Whilst just about usable it soon becomes to tireing and i just restart and everything is fine.   2)Beep on new email. To be fair I'm not sure if this is a hardy upgrade issue. But it seemed to stat to happen arround that time. When I recieve a new email in evoloution i get a system beep - and i can't find a option to turn it off for new email anywhere. This is particuly annoying when using the laptop in a quite place, like a libary. 3)Beep on start up. - This one is simple, When my Laptop starts up i get a system beep during the loading screen. I don't know if this is by design or not, but I'd like to turn it off, as it can be embarassing when i start up the laptop in a libary. I could get round this by Hibernating when possible - but as per above i can't hibernate practically. 4)Wi-fi LED. My Wi-fi works fine. As does the Fn-F2 to turn it on/off. However the light does not come on. This can be a little iratating when trying to use Fn-F2 as I don't know if it actually has done anything or not. I've tried some potential fix's from both this site and the ubuntu forums, but unfortunitly none have worked so far.   If it helps with any potential fixes it's a Inspiron 6400 and i have  the  2.6.24-21-generic Kernal currently (This seemed to be relevant to some of the Wi-fi LED fixes i tried, unsucessfully)

For #1, does switching to a virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6]) and back (Ctrl-Alt-F7) help?

unfortunitly, since i have proposed updates on, my kernel was updated today. This now means that i get an error 'kernel panic - not synching: Fatal exception in interupt' when i try and hibernate. Help with this would be apreciated. Thanks.

I'd suggest compiling your own kernel, at this point. Ubuntu 8.04 is known to have some problems with its kernel image (must be affecting only some users, otherwise they would have fixed it by now).

Before compiling your own kernel, tough, perhaps try removing linux-restricted-modules -- that might not be the correct name, I'm Ubuntu-less until my Mini 9 arrives next month -- and any other kernel-related package but the base kernel DEB. See whether that helps.
