The average temperature of my c2d (t5600) is between 45-55 degrees, too. Maybe the following page is a good reference-point:

Thanks guys, but I'm still wondering if there is any official (or unofficial) word on what is 'healthy'. In ubuntuforums, there was mention that someone had run ubuntu for a year on a dell, and averaged around 70 degrees Celsius. While this seemed very high to me, he said he had experienced no problems. But long term effects? What is a good temperature for not having to buy a new laptop every year?

The laptop as a whole runs very cool as opposed to others I have used. After a days use the case is only slighty warm.
