I have a similar problem: I downloaded the Dell Gutsy ISO but can't burn it to DVD. My CD/DVD drive has worked fine for CDs (all I have used it for), but it doesn't read blank DVDs. Also, in the System/Preferences/Removable Drives and Media menu, the Command for Data CDs line under "Blank CD and DVD discs" reads: "nautilus --no desktop burn:"
I ran the terminal command that was suggested for the previous post: there's a lot of verbiage before the === (equal signs) and the blank DVD insertion, but nothing after.
I am a complete newbie, with an inspiron 530 running Feisty (until I can figure out how to burn that ISO).
Well, this is either a d'oh moment for you, or for me, but it looks like you don't have a DVD-R/RW, only a CD burner. You won't be able to read blank DVDs on just a DVD reader, only a DVD-R/RW combo. ;-)
tells me that I have a CD R/W and DVD R only optical drive. I could have sworn I was purchasing a DVD burner when I walked through the online order process last May, but now that I look at the parts spec sheet I see that it's a CD-RW/DVD drive. Oh well! My humblest apologies for wasting everyone's time. Now I'm off to the Ubuntu forums to apologize....
Why not use the Update Manager to upgrade to Heron? I've been staring at it for three weeks or so, but I think I'll wait another month before clicking on it -- let them work out the kinks that folks are swuaking about over at the Ubuntu forums.
Thanks for clearing that up. Not my first d'oh moment by any means.
I'm still wondering how I'm going to upgrade from Feisty, since the Dell ISO went from CD size to DVD size. When I did a generic Feisty install after I had to replace my hard drive, that version did not recognize my ethernet card. The guy at Dell Support said to re-install Feisty with my Dell ISO CD, which I did, and it works fine. That's why I wanted a Dell ISO for Gutsy (and Hardy). But if I can't burn those DVDs, and if generic installs won't work, I'm not sure which way to turn.
Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. I'm with you on waiting a while for Heron, though, so I'll probably try it with Gutsy first - I'm still too new at this to get too frisky with new versions. I'm still a bit worried that Update Manager will wipe out the Dell stuff that the ethernet card needs, but maybe that fear is unfounded. I guess I'll find out...
Fedora did this on their last build (Fedora8), this time around they released CD iso files for Fedora9.
You can always find a buddy who has a DVD-R ;-) otherwise, I am not sure if Ubuntu does this or not, but you can use the LiveCD to install the build with Fedora - maybe Ubuntu does the same?

Can you open a terminal window and type:
sudo tail -100f /var/log/messages
then mark where you are just by typing: ========== (a couple equal signs)
then insert the blank DVD
post what is written to the messages logfile
thanks

as root type:
sudo cdrecord -scanbus
and post output ... the "stuff" in the /var/log/messages is what I wanted you to post.
Put DVD in driver
In separate terminal window run sudo tail -100f /var/log/messages
Then cut and past what gets printed when the DVD is inserted into the drive
If that's a little difficult to follow, just post the last 20 lines of dmesg after you insert the DVD

I copy/pasted the commands into separate terminal windows.
sudo cdrecord -scanbus got this:

Well, this is either a d'oh moment for you, or for me, but it looks like you don't have a DVD-R/RW, only a CD burner. You won't be able to read blank DVDs on just a DVD reader, only a DVD-R/RW combo. ;-)

Thanks, PhillyFloyd, for resolving the mystery for us. Turns out it's a d'oh moment for me, too. I assume this output:

Am I missing something obvious here?
Thanks.
P.S.: What's a jiffy in a tickless kernel?

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. I'm with you on waiting a while for Heron, though, so I'll probably try it with Gutsy first - I'm still too new at this to get too frisky with new versions. I'm still a bit worried that Update Manager will wipe out the Dell stuff that the ethernet card needs, but maybe that fear is unfounded. I guess I'll find out...
Thank you.

Enjoy
