Community Support for Dell Linux systems ...
Hey Guys,
Being a long time Linux user (going on 11 years now), I'm anxious to see Dell make this leap. I bet many other computer vendors are looking at this as a litmus test of sorts to see how many systems Dell sells and also how well the community will accept the Dell Linux systems.
I also think this'll test the community to see how well they can help support non-Linux users as I hope we'll see a flood of new faces to the Linux operating system. I'm not sure what the prices will look like for Dell Linux systems, but if we're talking %25-%40 less then Windows systems of equal hardware, this is a great chance for the Linux community to adopt some new users and advocates. Whether done by Ubuntu or some third party, we need to try and make these new Linux users feel at home, and give them as much help as possible.
I'd like to see someone create a very simple way, like downloading one file or even pressing one button on a website, to assist the Linux users in enabling the proprietary media formats Dell doesn't feel comfortable making available out of the box (for which I understand their reasons behind this). I think this would be the first thing most folks will want to do with their new Linux box... whether it's watching DVD's on their laptop, listening to MP3's, watching trailers online, or whatever.
Anyway, just some thoughts. Personally I think unless someone is a hard-core PC gamer, there's really no need for the average home user to _require_ Windows on their PC. There used to be a day when people had a choice, but in the last decade that choice has been funneled down to a Microsoft-only club. Remember Lotus 123? Remember Word Perfect? Remember DR-DOS? If the Linux community can help make Dell's Linux systems thrive, other companies will do the same, and as the Linux home market starts to grow we might see more driver support and application support from vendors... and the snowball starts.
I'm not anti-Microsoft, but I am pro-choice when it comes to computers and software.
Thanks for your time and ear ---
