A Linux BIOS? The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is part of the computer hardware that contains just enough information to get the computer up and running so that an OS can then be loaded and take control of the system. One can configure it (within limits) by entering setup early in the boot process (the exact way is system dependent). It can also be "flashed" using firmware updates from the manufacturer. Here are the instructions for flashing the BIOS of Dell systems running Linux. The BIOS itself is OS agnostic.

Based on sakuramboo's post, I retract my statements. (old guys can learn something new too!) :)

After having a good peak at both the Dell/Linux Bios site and the LinuxBIOS site which I could not see bios for Dell.? I have a few questions?

1) Are the Dell/Linux bios true Linux bios?
2) Does Dell keep bringing more bios for older system to convert to Linux bios?

I have two system my older PC and my Laptop
I was able to see a bios for my Dell XPS M1710
http://linux.dell.com/repo/software/bios-hdrs/system_bios_ven_0x1028_dev_0x01ce_version_a06/

I did attempt to flash using the commend below
root@rick-laptop:/home/rick/Desktop# dellBiosUpdate -u -f ./bios.hdr
WARNING: BIOS HDR file BIOS version appears to be less than or equal to current BIOS version.
This may result in bad things happening!
Exiting...
Did I get the wrong bios or are those bios the same as what I already have and not a true Linux bios?
If not will Dell come up with true Linux Bios?

I need help with that one
Dell XPS M1710

root@rick-laptop:/home/rick# getSystemId
Libsmbios: 0.12.1
System ID: 0x01CE
Product Name: MXG061
BIOS Version: A06

But I could not locate anything for the Dimension
Can you confirm that I do have the right bios and do you know if there will be something coming for my older Dimension 8200

Dell Dimension 8200

oot@rick-desktop:/# getSystemId
Libsmbios: 0.12.1
System ID: 0x010C
Product Name: Dimension 8200
BIOS Version: A09

It sounds to me that true Linux bios are a must for us Linux user and because Dell have their mobo pieced as they want using anything else than Dell would be risky?
Thanks for help
