Are you sure that it is not working. Could it be working but muted? I principally use Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu so I cannot explain exactly. I am fairly sure that some things are muted by default. I would use KMixer (a KDE app) to check. Have you tried loading and using something like Audacity to play about with the settings?

I've had a problem with mics too. Some don't put out enough power and require the +20db boost option check before I can hear anything. Try playing with the preferences for the Volume Control which you can access by right clicking on the specaker icon. You might find that the correct device is actually Capture rather than mic.

I have all inputs and outputs set to max using the gnome volume control. Ditto alsa-mixer. There are three switches using model=5stack. One controls whether line is in or out. I am not sure what the purposes of the other two are. I originally thought that it may be a mic boost problem. There is no mic boost control. But then I tried the mic in Vista again. The mic works with boost set at 0, 10, and 20 db. So that does not appear to be the problem. I also tried booting into linux after booting into Vista to see if there might be some kind of initialization that should be performed. But that made no difference.
