Failed to start the X server

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 (becaues I had nothing but problems with 7.10) on my Inspiron 1420 and it installs and when it reboots and tries to load the X server I get the error, "Failed to start the X server". I guess its not finding my video card, so I tried running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and manually configured it, but still giving me the same error. Any ideas on what else I can try?

Can you boot more recent Live CD's?

At least get some solid info to work with. You need to be more specific with problems, make a list of :

hardware component, make model number ------------ issues

Then can research, whether you need update X server, kernel drivers etc. As it is, I'd have to have an Inspiron 1420 to even make a start on this.

You could try running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" again ...and specify VESA as the video. This is kind of lowest denominator stuff and you should be able to get some kind of gui up.

It could be a lack of kernel modules to support your video card. You might try "sudo apt-get update" and see if that fixes anything. If your graphics card is an intel 915, then there are some known issues with it, try 'sudo apt-get install intel-915' If this doesn't work, can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
