For those Complaining about Fan activity in Linux
Please look into installing a little program called cpudyn which dynamically adjusts your cpu speed (which cuts down the fan activity significantly). Note that you must have a kernel that supports speedstep for pentium M cpus.
My laptop is an Inspiron 8600 and it works just as well in linux as it does in windows.
I got everything working smooth in linux. If there is enough interest or questions I can setup a website with instructions about configuring the hardware etc..
