GX280, Broadcom and Linux
Hi All,
I have just received an Optiplex GX280 for certification before a bulk order and it seems that Mandrake 10.0 and Suse 9.1 does not detect the Broadcom 57xx network card.
We will be installing from a ftp server and need the card detected at installation.
Any one out there with the same problem?
I tried using the driver from the broadcom website but no luck.
It seems the new version of NIC is not supported by their own drivers yet.
Cheers,
Craig.

It can be obtained from here: http://www.broadcom.com/drivers/driver-sla.php?driver=570x-Linux
Note: The driver will need to be compiled, instructions are included in the readme file.

Now, I can see that Broadcom has released the drivers for the network adapter.
But to compile and install those drivers I should at least get a working kernel, and I can't do that since an FTP Install is my 'ONLY' option. Seems like a chicken and egg problem.
Also, I checked redhat's site for anyinfo on how to use the driver diskette..I couldn't find anything useful.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

i use the tg3 driver which is part of recent 2.6 and 2.4 kernels, it works better than the broadcom driver (which had problems with low transmit rates on our GX280's)

Well I must mention that the boot image version i used was a few months old...do you think the recent boot images would have resolved the issue? Do they actually change the boot image for a stable version??
Any clues gentlemen?

ok, I think I can see where the problem is.... I have got a win image on another partition, therefore I get internet access in general! I have downloaded the ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.1/rpm/i586/kernel-smp-2.6.5-7.111.i586.rpm
and installed it from the win partition using:
rpm -Urh kernelName...and so on...
then configured konqueror and now it is working! it is still a bit slow! but I am hoping to get that solved as well!
good luck

I installed a Debian sarge 2.4.28-bf2.4, I see the card and configure it, but impossible to connect ftp for the netinstall...
So I put in an old 3com 59xc and desactivate in the Bios the broadcom...It works...(Under Mandrake 10.0 & 10.1 the broadcom don't work too...)But I think the GX280 have some problems under Linux...Must wait the next Bios update...?
