HELP!! Inspiron Mini 10v with Ubuntu just doesn't work!
I ordered 2 of the same model in Japan for my mom and sister who didn't need too many apps but just wanted to use it for email, Skype and get on the Internet sometimes. The packages finally arrived 2 days ago so I opened them and set them up, got them connected to the wireless network. That's all I could do! They just don't work at all because they keep freezing up in a few minutes after I turn them on, or if I get lucky enough to get an application running, the machine would just crash. I have to force the system to shut down each time and I restart one just to go through the same thing again and again. Is there any solution for this problem? Or is Windows a better OS on this machine? I'd appreciate any help because my family isn't tech savvy at all and I was supposed to be getting the machines work before I left Japan, but now it seems like I'm leaving before I could solve any problem so I'm very frustrated. I told them to get ready to return them and pay a little extra to get Windows versions. But before I tell them to go ahead, I wanted others' opinions.

My 10v came with WinXP on it. That worked quite well, but I downloaded the Ubuntu 9.04 "netbook remix", and installed it (a 15 minute install!). It has been quite stable on my machine, and wireless internet worked without fussing. Nothing I have tried has crashed, although I don't think audio is working because of missing drivers.
I have no idea what your problem could be. What you described is certainly not normal.
I hesitate suggesting that you download Ubuntu and reinstall it, but if nothing else works, give it a type. It is certainly not necessary to use Windows.

Did you run the Ubuntu 9.04 as a live-CD? Did that work? Download a live-CD image and transfer to a USB stick if necessary.

I downloaded the "Moblin 2.0 Live Image" for netbooks at http://moblin.org/downloads and put it on a USB stick. The Moblin site gives instructions for putting the image on the USB stick.
I did not try it from a live-CD.
I have had trouble installing WinXP from a USB-powered DVD drive. At some point in the installation process does not access the DVD for a long enough period that the DVD winds down, and when the process tries to access the DVD again, the drive will not wake up / spin up. My wall-plug powered drive woke up when it was supposed to.
