Inspiron 5150 problem with Kernel>2.4.22
Hi,
I have a Dell Inspriron 5150 laptop (BIOS rev. A26), which works quite well with Debian unstable.
Currently I'm running a 2.4.22 Kernel with ethernet driver from Broadcom (bcm4400) and display driver from nvidia.
So far so good, but I would like to upgrade the Kernel because Ndiswrapper (which is used to load windows drivers for the wireless lan card) requires 2.4.23 and above.
Unfortunatly those kernels won't work well with my notebook. All show the same behavior:
1) usb module tries to assign an address to usb memory stick but this
address is not accepted.
2) The bcm4400 broadcom driver can be loaded without any problem. when the ethernet interface starts up, I can see a DHCP request on my lan, but the interface cannot receive the DHCP offer or any other packet.
(btw same behavior with b44 kernel module)
I haven't tried more, but I expect more such strange things.
Does anybody has an idea, what's reason for those problem, or even know a
solution?
Thanks,
Torsten

Hi, Torsten,
I have the same problem.
I try to install the new Mandrake 10.0, and I had to downgrade to a 2.4 kernel
instead of a 2.6.
With this limitation, I have been able to install Mandrake.
Best regards

same kind of problems here with MDK 10.0 CE (Dell Inspiron 5150, 1Gb RAM, 64 MB Nvidia card). I had to boot the 2.4.?? kernel because the 2.6.? gave me a lot of problems. I issued a bug report on qa.mandrakesoft.com. I hope these problems get some attention.
Any success with the wireless card and Ndiswrapper?

Hi,
so obviously this not a distribution related problem (I tried kernel 2.4.23, 2.4.25 and 2.6.4? build from source from kernel.org)
Unfortunatly running kernel 2.4.22 I cannot try Ndiswrapper (at least 2.4.23 :-( is needed)!
Does anybody is able to use USB or Ethernet with a kernel above 2.4.22?
