Mandrake 10.1 popped on to my DimV400 easy as pie about a week ago and even resized my Win2K partition automatically. I got this PII on eBay for $30 and it's pretty much my main internet machine right now. Linux is much less demanding on system resources than Windows and Dells are made to last, so if you have an old machine you were considering retiring, you might want to retire the OS instead of the hardware.

Mandrake is very easy for newbies, but is rather heavy in the bells and whistles department as far as Linux goes. There are distros out there that will keep my old classic productive and useful for many years to come. You might want to check out a few live CDs to give you a chance to check out Linux without making changes to your hard drive. The Dell BIOS is supposed to be a bit tricky with Knoppix, the most popular run-from-CD distro, so I never tried it personally.
