Installing Fedora 6 on Dimension 9200
Hi, I have the following configuration:
320GB HD on Sata0
DVD writer on Sata1
Nvidia 7900GS
2 GB Ram
I see that many people have been able to install Fedora 6 on the 9200, unfortunately I have not had any luck.
I have disabled the RAID option on the SATA controller in order to install either the 32 or 64-bit versions of Fedora but after a reboot I cannot boot into either OS.
I get messages such as:
sata4: port failed to respond (30sec)
sata4: SRST failed (status) etc. after a short time the screen goes blank and nothing happens.
When I look under GRUB I see:
root(hd0,0) file system is ext2fs, partition type is 0x83.
kernel / vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fcg.img rh
This being my first time installing a linux OS I just chose the default installation for the hard drive partition setup.
The only distro that I have been able to install is Ubuntu, but I would rather use Fedora, Centos or Red Hat and with the latter two I cannot even get past the initial installation phase as they cannot find the proper components to install the OS.
I think they do not have the proper drivers for the SATA drive, although I have read that Centos installations have been successful.
The drivers that Fedora loads are the ata_piix drivers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Since many have successfully installed Fedora I believe I may only need a small hardware or software configuration adjustment, but do not know where to look.
Thanks
Frank
