Installing SAS 6/iR on an Existing Linux system
I've searched the net long enough but cannot find a comfortable answer to the following.
The driver for SAS 6/iR RAID controller is available for RHEL5.2 from Dell as a separate module. Is it therefore possible to install this controller and an extra hard disk into an existing Linux machine (a single disk PowerEdge T100) and simply install the driver to create RAID1? If this is possible then will it re-construct the newly installed disk? Or is this not possible and I would need to reinstall the OS from scratch? (I am aware that the BIOS would have to be set up for RAID1 before installing the driver).
The notes accompanying the driver package suggests that the above is possible with the use of DKMS package however the user guide on the controller does not state clearly, like it does for Windows, that it is possible to install the driver on an existing Linux system (at least this is not clear to me). So, is there anyone out there who can shed some light on this please? It will be much appreciated.

Hi,
Can anyone from Dell Linux Engineering share their experience on this please?
Thanks.

You need a Perc card/RAID controller to do this, but yes ... it is easiest to do with the Perc controller software ... you can enter the controller setup and just bring the new disk online and configure it.
You can't simply plug a new harddrive into a server and create a RAID (hardware) ... you can use mdadm to create a software RAID1 ... similar to the hardware RAID but there isn't a separate RAID controller, it is all controlled by the kernel/software.

The Dell supplied linux drivers for these cards are broken and the kernel module generally will fail to build properly. It is quite easy to fix but Dell seems to not be that interested. This applies to the SAS 5/iR also, and probably any other LSI Logic based controller.
Anyone wishing to get these installed and working properly on a 2.6.6+ kernel can send an e-mail to...
