Intel Haswell availability?
This might a bit a too early to ask, but do you already have any plans regarding Intel Haswell? In particular, do you plan to release an updated version of XPS 13 with Haswell under the hood or will come with a completely new laptop? I'm seriously considering an upgrade to Sputnik, but the improvements in Haswell, in particular better power management and faster graphics, are big enough that I might wait a few months.

I consider buying a new Dell XPS for University, since my old notebook only has a battery life of one hour left after four years of good service.
I would like to see a 15 inch version (1920 x 1080 would be enough, but the more the better), Haswell of course, a DVD drive and maybe the option to have a dedicated graphics card.
Also I would like to have the option to choose the keyboard layout, which seems impossible at the moment, at least in the german store.
Basically an upgraded XPS 15 running Ubuntu.

I'm looking at the same thing, XPS natively running Ubuntu. I put in a request for a quote on the XPS 13 Ultrabook dev edition but now think I want to wait on Haswell for the following reasons:
* Claims by Intel of significant battery life improvement (both for actively running applications and standby)
* Haswell's much improved graphics
Hopefully Dell isn't waiting on the Windows 8.1 update (rumored to release in Oct/Nov 2013) to release the Haswell XPS Ultrabooks :-(

Barton, I'd love to see a Sputnik 15" XPS Ultrabook with true 1080p graphics and LED backlit screen.

I didn't plan on commenting on this thread, but since it's active I can make a short comment as well.
According to me the current XPS 13 is an amazing piece of hardware as it is. The only thing that you could change in the new iteration is to update the processor to one of the new Intel Haswell chips.
If you're feeling adventurous you could as well add higher res. screen, but the current one isn't bad at all and we all know that Linux and in particular Ubuntu with Unity doesn't support high-dpi screens quite well, so that might be a waste of money and resources.
I'm actually barely holding myself from getting the current version with Haswell coming out next week.

When I read this comment I simply had to register and reply.
For some time now, I've been on the hunt for the perfect laptop/ultrabook for me, and there's really one been one model that came close to satisfying my needs, mainly the XPS 13 FHD and I might end up buying just that, but it is a lot of money for something that isn't quite what I'd like.
So, now that you ask, I thought that I'd let you know what I'm looking for in the perfect machine. Some of it is a bit silly, but I'm death serious non the less.
1. No moving parts.
Is about time that people realize that not everything is about speed.
Obviously the screen does not count as a moving part, nor does the keys on the keyboard and such. ;)
Edit: just to make clear that what I'm really talking about is a fan less model.
2. OLED
I want an OLED screen. Why is it that it's so damn hard? I realize that Dell are probably not to blame, but this is the tale of my vision of perfection after all.
3. Ram
I'd really like to hit that 16gb mark sometime soon, without having to carry my laptop around in a trailer.
4. SSD
256gb will do (or 128gb in a pinch), preferably SLC.
5. Resolution
Full HD
6. Keyboard
I don't like multi country keyboard. I'm neither Swedish nor Norwegian, I'm Danish and I'd like my keyboard to reflect that as well.
7. No one needs 50 USB port and if they do, the probably won't mind using an external hub.
8. Touchscreen
I don't know what have gotten in to people, not least Microsoft and Intel, but a touchscreen has no place on a laptop. It's cool to offer it as an option, but it should never be imposed upon you.
9. I hate webcams!
10. Linux support
Yes that's right, we are quite a few who do not enjoy Windows, for one reason or another. I for one would like be able to buy a product without having to pay Microsoft money and without worrying if my Linux distribution of choice will have issues. It really isn't that hard.
11. Optical media is a dead technology and has been so for a very long time. It only a matter of time before people realize that. In short, I don't want anything I don't need, and that goes for any cd, dvd or bd drive as well. Should I need it for some odd reason, I'll buy and external drive.
12. General build quality.
Well, I'm no designer, but asus, samsung, apple and to some extend dell, has got the right idea.
13. It may sound odd, but I'd pay quite a lot of money to get rid of things, like the webcam, having my own custom logo on the back, not having the windows key forced upon me (maybe I want a tux key instead) and so on and so forth. The point being that people, not least me, are willing to pay for you to walk that extra mile.
That about what I could come up with now, though I'm sure it's only half of it, but I think I got my point through.
Also, thanks for listening.
Best regards.

For me it would be:
- A quad core haswell i7,
- a 1920x1080 or higher screen resolution,
- thin,
- light.
Actually the xps 13 dev editon would be perfect with the last haswell (any ETA on that?) possibly quad core and a maybe a better screen resolution...

I also registered just to comment on this.
I really like the new xps 15, but if Dell can replace the i7 3632 with a Haswell processor and replace the nvidia GT640 with a better graohics card, I would not consider ANY OTHER brand and buy the xps 15 without hesitation.

I wonder if that will be possible. According to PC Mag (www.pcmag.com/.../0,2817,2419884,00.asp) in order to certify as an Ultrabook it will have to have a touch screen:
"For a system to receive ultrabook certification, it will need to meet more requirements than before. These include: a mandatory touch screen; waking in less than 3 seconds; the use of speedier storage; much improved battery life (seven days on standby, 6 hours of HD video playback, 9 hours of idling, and more); antivirus and antitheft protections; and support for WiDi and voice controls."

Haswell is officially announced now, as are a few Dell XPS models:
www.zdnet.com/computex-2013-intel-announces-haswell-for-2-in-1-devices-fanless-core-powered-convertibles-7000016341
Hopefully, Dell can now comment on the next Sputnik with Haswell :-)

I noticed the other day that the dell website had "non-touchscreen" verbiage on the xps 13 site. It looked like they were trying to differentiate between models with this feature, but obviously, they aren't currently offering a touchscreen xps 13. I'm wondering if that's in the pipeline? Could this have been a little slip that revealed work in progress.

I also registered specifically to comment in this thread.
I've been an Apple user for about 10 years, and I greatly prefer OS X to Windows. Even on the hardware front, I think Apple is at the forefront of the industry. I've just started dabbling in Linux, though, and I love it, but dual-booting OS X and Linux is a pain. There is no elegant solution, which leaves me desiring a dedicated Linux machine.
On the PC front, the XPS 13 is the machine that really holds my interest. I'm drawn to the industrial design, and I greatly prefer supporting companies based in the U.S.
There are only a few things I would like to see updated:
1) Touch screen. Like it or not, touch is the future, and it would be nice to have a more future-proof system
2) Dock. Like others have said, it would be wonderful to dock the laptop and instantly be connected to external drives, monitors, etc. This could easily be attained by using Thunderbolt. Also, using a high-throughput industry standard instead of a propriety connector gives the customer more options down the line. It would also allow the Dell-branded dock accessory to be used with other machines. Everybody wins.
3) Haswell. Enough has been said about this one already. :)
4) Linux, without the additional developer-oriented packages. Granted, this is aimed at developers, but I want to express serious interest from a consumer, even if I am a little more tech-savvy than the average consumer. Yes, I could uninstall the packages I'd never use, but why not just make them optional in the first place?
Anyway, thanks for reading this. I'm very excited about the forthcoming Haswell update!
