Intel Haswell availability?

This might a bit a too early to ask, but do you already have any plans regarding Intel Haswell? In particular, do you plan to release an updated version of XPS 13 with Haswell under the hood or will come with a completely new laptop? I'm seriously considering an upgrade to Sputnik, but the improvements in Haswell, in particular better power management and faster graphics, are big enough that I might wait a few months.

It looks that way because of the page design, but under tech specs, its ubuntu (as does the system summary in the order page).

Processor

  • 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4650U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.3 GHz)

Operating System

  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 SP1

Believe the webpage for the windows and ubuntu boxes have borrowed a bit too much from each other!

@urbanshepard, looks like you purchased your system with Windows rather Ubuntu, correct?

All, let me do some more digging.

I'm in the same boat. Placed my order on Dec 6th (from the US website). It has been in status "In production" since then and the current ETA is Jan 16th.

I'm not gonna cancel my order either unless I know for sure that the HD5000 version will be available (in a timeframe within the next month). I think the HD4400 version is still a nice laptop and will provide everything I need, don't get me wrong. But it leaves kind of a bad taste in my mouth just knowing that there's a better version out there (which costs just a little more and I'd absolutely be willing to pay for it), but I just can't get it where I live. And I don't understand why Dell decided to handle it that way. (Maybe there's a business reason behind it, who knows. But right now I'm not seeing it. :)

And even if I got a friend to order it for me from one of the countries where the HD5000 version is available, then I'd have to accept to have a keyboard with a layout from that country (everywhere I looked it said that the keyboard-layout cannot be changed when placing the order) and so I couldn't have a US-layout.

I'm sure this and the fact that this machine has been on backorder for quite a while and may not be delivered before Christmas will incur quite a few cancelled orders for Dell. It's a pity for them if they miss that business.

Mine shipped on the 17th and I should have it in my hands later today. I plan to dump Ubuntu immediately and install Debian sid, so not sure if my feedback on wifi will be valid for anyone else.

Wonderful!

Please, when someone get his hands on the new XPS 13, can tell us how good the wifi reception is? I know I know, I'm repeating myself :) , but for me this was a very important issue with the previous Sputnik.

Thank you!

Baxeico, I will report on the WiFi performance when I get a chance. The laptop should be delivered this Saturday, but I will be busy all weekend and will most likely only be able to open the package on Sunday night at the earliest.

Regarding WiFi issues on the Ivy Bridge XPS 13: It seems like a lot of people were able to fix all issues by now (with the exception of hardware-related issues). There were 3 different WiFi cards used in that model, it seems. I found good tips here and here. But on the other hand, I realize that one would expect this to work out of the box without any tinkering, which is kind of the whole point of this laptop. :) Just thought I'd post these links, in case anybody hasn't seen them yet. As I said, I'll report on the Haswell XPS 13 WiFi performance as soon as I can.

My XPS 13 developer edition was delivered today. A lot earlier than expected, but granted I live in Memphis so the Fedex hub is in my town. I am about to unbox it, I'll let you know how the wifi goes.

Mine arrved on Saturday, was able to pick it up and unpack it last night.

I plan to write a full review and I'll post the link to it here when it's done, but for now let me address the WiFi question, since a lot of people asked about it: I did not have any problems with the WiFi during the 4-5 hours I used it so far. I was able to connect to my network just fine. I didn't notice any lag, no disconnects, no glitches, nothing. I ran a speedtest on speedtest.net and it came back fine. I haven't tried a FTP-transfer yet, will do that later. I've downloaded multiple files, no problems so far. I've logged in to remote SSH servers and everything was normal. No abnormal lag or delay. I've put the machine to sleep several times and when it woke up, the WiFi connection was still fine. Same after reboots.

HOWEVER: I should point out one thing I noticed. The signal-strength indicator in the top right corner of the screen is not showing full bars, even though my router is less than 4 meters (that's about 12 feet) away from the laptop. It's showing 4 bars out of 5 (or is it 3 out of 4? Not sure. It's 1 bar less than full :). All other devices in my household (MacBook Pro, Android cellphones) show full bars when they are in the same location as the XPS 13 (or even further away, it's a big room). That's all I can say. Like I said, so far the experience I've had was not impacted at all by not having full bars.

All in all, from the few hours I've used the machine, I absolutely love it. I plan to stick with the LTS releases, so I'll probably stay on 12.04 until 14.04 comes out.

Hi Pixel (feel slightly silly typing that, but there you go)!

When you do your review, if you can let us know battery life, I would appreciate it. I often travel to places where power is simply not available, and being able to do an entire day's work on one charge is pretty compelling. Also, WiFi is typically dicey in such areas, so your comment is pretty interesting:

My friend has the previous generation XPS 13. The WiFi reception is not nearly as good as my Thinkpad X220. Maybe it's the antennae or card, but whatever it is, when I can barely get connections, he can't. Although it's not a scientific study, my Thinkpad seems to get 1-2 more bars of 'signal'. I didn't actually look at the radio performance to see the reception levels, but once the holiday is over I can make a small study.

Interestingly... maybe, the link still works for the 4650u hd5000 but it't not showing the search results in the UK anymore.
