Installing Lilo or Grub is the only way. The computer will read the MBR (master boot record) and load windows regardless of the data at the end of the drive. Installing Lilo is very unlikely to mess-up your windows partition.
You can "uninstall" Lilo if you still have your WinXP disk. Just boot off of the disk, select recover, type: fixmbr at the prompt, and Lilo will be gone.
I figured it out in the end. I installed the loader on my /boot partition, copied the 1st 512kb of it to my windows directory and used the xp boot loader to load linux
