Issues with new XPS 13 developer edition (Ubuntu)
This computer runs Ubuntu, which I am not especially familiar with.
During the initial boot, the setup dialogue crashed after I entered my wifi password. The machine restarted without allowing me to set my user-name, password, time zone, etc. I was logged in under eom@dell with an unknown password. I managed to change the password after some internet searches (through the root terminal in safe mode) but what I really want to do is restore factory conditions and start over.
When I boot I tried pressing escape while Ubuntu was loading but there was no restore system option. I have also tried updating through the software updater but I have run into numerous errors and the updating never completed, even after several restarts.
I think the next step would be to reinstall Ubuntu from a USB stick but I would appreciate some guidance here. Is this the next logical step? Is there something else I should do first? And if I do need to reinstall from a USB, how should I go about it?
Thanks.

I had the same problem. The procedure worked in my case: I pressed Esc when the purple screen appeared, and saw a few options including "Restore UBUNTU to Factory Satate". Later, I wanted to see the options again and had to try several times to boot and interrupt, presumably pressing Esc at wrong moments.

It's interesting actually, there is no "reset to factory settings" for me. I got to that menu okay, but that option is just missing. I talked to my brother who bought an xps 13 when the developer version first came out and had to reset using that option, but he had no idea why mine was missing that option. We decided that the most likely reason for this is that he was able to update and I was not. Or, he ordered a larger hd and we thought that the smaller one might not have a recovery partition.
I did end up fixing this issue. I had to use the "dell recovery" program to create a USB .iso file and then I booted from this and was able to install over the initial version. The setup ran fine this time around and everything seems fine. Updated successfully and no errors.
