Latitude D630 - Graphic issues
Recently purchased a D630 with Win XP with expectation of installing PCLinuxOS distro as dual boot (I still need some Win XP functionality....unfortunately). Had been running a similar configuration on my old Latitude C610 and running fine! PCLinuxOS doesn't seem to have the proper driver for the Intel 965GM video. Found an Intel site where you can get the necessary stuff to recompile the kernel and the whole process is explained..... "sort of" ...... but it is NOT for the faint of heart! ....and says as much! So figuring that Dell is already offering ubuntu preinstalled on some Inspirons perhaps I could run it in yet another partition. I downloaded the latest and greatest Feisty Fawn on my desktop, made a bootable cd and booted the new Latitude......only to learn that the lived CD will NOT run due to video incompatibilities! So I am back to running PCLinuxOS which at least will run albeit not at the proper resolution. Am getting tired of all the graphics being short and fat! Other that wait for PCLinuxOS to offer a compiled video driver does anyone have any suggestions? I really do prefer PCLinuxOS over ubuntu, but would consider having 3 OS's PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu and XP......if necessary. Once I figure the video out I'll start to tackle the non working sound in Linux!
