I found the following link:
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Dell+Latitude+D830
"Depending on the kernel configuration of your Linux distribution, the DVD drive may not be able to be detected. Because of this you may need a external USB optical drive or some similar method to install Linux. This is a problem with Fedora 7."
This I think might be the issue, Is there a chance that you might have a usb cd-rom, you can try...?
In the mean time I will see if I can find any further information to try and help.
Yeah, I kind of figured out that it was my dvd-drive that was not detected thanks to fedora 7... But, I do not have anything external at my disposal... I'm also looking for solutions, if I find any, I'll make sure to post here.
I'm back, and with good news. I found a linux distro which supports all from the d830 immediatelly, if you start from the live cd (I used one from the Linux format magazine, no 95 if I'm not wrong) It's about PClinuxOS - http://www.pclinuxos.com/ Hope someone is helped with this :)
