Lattitude 505 - SuSE 9.2 LCD/External video problem

I've got a Lattitude 505 on which I am running SuSE 9.2 (soon to upgrade to 9.3)

I'm currently using a 2.6.8 kernel

The key combination only toggles between the LCD and the external
DB-15 video port. I cannot seem to get both active simultaneously.

Since this works with Windows-XP Pro it seems likely that either the kernel
and/or X-Windows/KDE are lacking some specialised support that is required.

Any suggestions about where I may be able to find modules? (pre-compiled or
source or X-Windows/KDE device/video driver code) I don't mind building or
patching a kernel -- I'd just like the ability to use this properly in
Linux-- I'll even change distributions if necessary.

It really stuffs my "street-cred" as a Unix/Linux bigot when I have to boot
XP to deliver a lecture.
