LinDVD Reinstall

Okay I've just updated my M1330n to Ubuntu 8.04 with a fresh install. I've reinstalled LinDVD from the backup ISO that I burned to disc. It works great except when I try to make it the default DVD player. All I get is an error telling me /media/cdrom0 is unplayable.

Does anybody know how to fix this? There is an environment variable CDROMDEVICE. But I can't figure out how to use it.

Try to insert a DVD Video disc into drive and wait 4 it to be mounted. Then try registering LinDVD as a default player. Can u tell me how u obtained LinDVD cause I can't find it anywhere (on intervideo web site it says its only available 2 manufacturers).

aikiwolfie,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

If you cannot get LinDVD to install and your system shipped with the software you can contact Canonical.com to obtain a link for the download. In order to be able to get the download link you will need to provide them with your system service tag number. They will then verify your system was shipped with LinDVD.

No you don't understand. LinDVD installs fine. It works fine. What I am having trouble with is setting it to be the default DVD player. When I try to do that it refuses to play DVDs.

I Think What Jesse Is Saying Is That You May Need A Newer Version Of LinDVD 4 It 2 Be Fully Compatible With Ubuntu 8.04.1, Just FYI.

No I don't think that's it at all. Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04.1 use the same mount points for the DVD drive.

Okay problem solved! All i had to do was create a very simple shell script containing the text;

lindvd --autoplay

I saved the script to /opt/lindvd-1.2.5/lindvd.sh and then made a symbolic link from there to /usr/bin. I could have just dumped the script in /usr/bin though. The next thing I had to do was edit the /etc/gnome/defaults.list file. I looked for the entry x-content/video-dvd=totem.desktop. I changed the "totem" for "lindvd".

Next I changed the menu entry for LinDVD by right clicking on the Applications menu. I found the LinDVD option in the Sound & Video section. Right clicked on it and selected "Properties". I thenchanged the "command" to lindvd.sh and I was done.

Now LinDVD startsup by default when I insert a movie DVD.

I cannot find the canonical.com support for LinDVD?

LinDVD came on my Dell 1525.

Dell sent me a new (refurbished) hard drive which was Wipped clean.

When I installed the Ubuntu 8.04.1 CD that Dell sent me, No LinDVD?!?

How do I get and Install LinDVD?

canonical sites just sends me over to Ubuntu Forum.

Help, I'm stuck!

They will give you the download link for Lndvd after verification. Hope this helps

Thank you very much!

It worked, Only AFTER I rebooted, which the phone tech forgot to tell me about.

(I thought Rebooting was a Windose Thing!?)
