Linux on 700m?

My 700m arrives this week. Has anyone had any luck running Ubuntu or Suse? I'd rather stick with Ubuntu because it's easier to get the updates. However, I won't be dual-booting so if Suse can give me suspend, hibernate, etc. I'll live with hard to come by updates.

My 700m also arrives in the next days and I would like to run Fedora Core 3 on it. Does anybody have any experience with Linux systems on the 700m? Maybe I'll just use VMWare for a virtual Linux...

I'm considering VMware too. It's only $190 but I'd like to have it run under Linux and have Windows be the guest. I got Suse 9.2 today. Cross your fingers.

Is it working Mike? I'm pretty curious...

I've got Suse 9.2 installed on my 700m. Went well. My issues so far

* It is in 800x600 mode. This guy has the trick to get it into 1280x800

http://www.celifornia.com/documents/dell700m.html
I'll try it over the weekend.

* He also mentions something about the trackpad. I use an external mouse so not an issue.

* It only suspends to the hard drive, and not to RAM. The above link mentions a fix too.

* When I suspend to disk, the USB mouse isn't recognized upon start up.

* I can switch to an external monitor with VGA out at boot time with fn-f8 but not after I have booted. I think KDE is stealing the keys.

I haven't tried VMware. Not sure if I'm going to buy it. No need for Windows at this time.

Haven't tried to burn a CD or DVD yet. Guess I should play one to see if it is ok. I did install from DVD.

I have run 9.2 Pro and am currently running 9.3 Pro. It took me a day or 2 to figure out how to switch it to 1200x800, but since you have a link (provided above by someone else) it shouldn't be a problem. Other than that I had no problem with 9.2. 9.3 on the other hand gave me a slight problem when I installed a patch for nvidia cards by mistake. If you install 9.3 DO NOT install the NVIDIA patch. I still have to work on getting my palm to sync in 9.3 although 9.2 is used to sync.

Hope this helps.

Here is my Monitor, Mode and Screen sections from my XF86Config. The name changes to xorg.conf in Suse 9.3. The trick is to run the 855resolution the hit Ctrl-ALT-backspace to restart the X server. Put the resolution command in a script the make it start at boot time using YaST. The screen looks great at 1280x800.

/usr/local/bin/855resolution 5c 1280 800

I have just got Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary) running on my 500m worked as soon as the installation finished wifi and all at max resolution. Now i am tweaking etc etc. I am a noob to linux and although it is not as easy to install things i am learning very quickly and discovering its power. I always seem to have a problem with file sharing (networking - wirelessly) in XP. Worked the second i booted up. Lovin' it!

I tried to install Suse Linux 9.1 on VMWare as a guest OS but the graphic doesn't work. I just see a ambiguous, richly colored screen. Does anybody has experience with VMWare on a 700m?
