I was using everything that you suggested except I am unsure of the VESA aspect. I'll check on that one when I get the chance this evening. The resolution on my screen was such that it was difficult for any open window to fit on the desktop.
Have you all tried using the generic "VESA" driver during X Configuration?
and first set it to 16bit color and 1024x768, also make sure your Monitor settings vertical and horizontal refresh rates are correct, most resolutions are posted online if you search just a little bit.

Check out my post at:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_linux&message.id=4369
The only difference since then, is if you buy RHEL and download the update 2, you don't
need to make any changes to the BIOS
