No PS/2 ports on the E521/C521.. and the USB problem, whatever it is, also affects other USB devices. Until the BIOS update my printer and scanner didn't work either, but a thumb drive and my digital camera did.

Thanks for the link -- I had not encountered that issue before. It looks like a quick workaround would be to use a usb -> ps/2 mouse adaptor and use the ps/2 interface, but other than that (and the workarounds mentioned in bugzilla.kernel.org and on launchpad.net -- messing with interrupt routing, flashing the bios, custom-compiling kernels, etc.) I do not have a solution I can offer -- the bug does not appear to have been root caused.

Our goal with all Dell systems is to use standard Linux drivers, and to make sure those drivers are open-source and in the upstream kernel and distributions. Through our Feisty testing, we have found several bugs with drivers related to our hardware. We expect these to be fixed in Feisty updates, and those should also be upstream as well as in Gutsy

Ben:

I'm curious how well the corporate culture of Dell is melding with the more open culture of the free/open source development model.

Hello, I am Victor Lowther, the Ubuntu Linux Technical Analyst at Dell. I am primarily responsible for ensuring that our Ubuntu support team is fully up to date with the current Ubuntu issues, and I also am responsible for handling any escalated Ubuntu issues.  I have been an Ubuntu user since 2004, and can answer any questions you may have about how Ubuntu support at Dell works.

Interesting, most people have the opposite problem (livecd works, alternate doesn't).

It's always an interesting situation, mainly because the kernel on both is the same (at least with feisty and newer).

Possibly check the dmesg output for clues. Is there more than one CD/DVD drive on this machine?

That specific problem was allready in the Linux Dell forum here... anyway.

The ide-generic module makes the device working, the desktop CD doesn't load the module despite it's in the initramfs.

I have a Dimension C521. I installed Ubuntu 7.04 for AMD 64. During the install the mouse froze. After I finally got it installed, the mouse randomly freezes. I also tried installing SuSe 10.2 for AMD 64, and the same thing happened. Is this machine incompatible with Linux? Should I try Fedora?

Thanks.

Good morning John! I've been looking for the conexant modem drivers that Dell has been promising to make available. Two weeks ago, I was told it would be 1 to 2 weeks. Here we are, two weeks later, and they are still not available for download. Is there any news regarding this problem?

We ship a copy of Ubuntu 7.04 with the system, so you should be able to reinstall if your hard drive crashes. We also have info about bugs and workarounds here: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.04

In the new Intel Designs there are trusted computing features, that prevent for example Viruses spreading themselves. This works with Visa. Will it work with Ubuntu to?

Thanks! When a new Dell is shipped with Ubuntu, what is the mechanism for any recover that might be needed later? Do you ship a separate recovery CD?

Basically I have this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16839121008

iwconfig lists it as a rt 61 card

It shows up in the admin config, and I can actually see the wireless access points around my home. When I try to connect to my AP (which is only mac filtered and I've preset the allowed mac's) the trying to connect to network spinning icon does it's thing then eventunally after 1-2 minutes stops and goes back to the computer icon with exclamation point "no network connection"

I've read the issues and posts about this particular chipset, but it seems this card is working out of the box since it identifys the card and picks up the AP's...why do you think I'm unable to connect?!?

Below are some command’s I ran to check the card:
