http://www.linuxant.com/company The driver there workers with the Conexant modem that came with my Dell laptop. Try the free version to make sure it works. You might want to wait and see what drivers Dell provides after they start shipping Ubuntu laptops. If you end up having to purchase the drivers from Linuxant, it might still be cheaper than a new modem.

Post back if it works, please! I tried the free Linuxant driver on my Xandros 4 system and didn't get it working. Documentation said it worked with ATI modems up to 1002.2378 (if I recall correctly), but Scanmodem revealed that my Inspiron 1501 has a modem numbered 1002.2383 (again, IIRC). I haven't been in touch with Linuxant yet.

Like you, I'm dual-booting and have reconciled myself to booting into XP to go online this summer (when only a telephone line will be available) and to hear audio (no sound working yet either in Linux).

I downloaded and installed "hsfmodem_6.60.00.09Full_K2.6.20_15_generic_ubuntu_i386.deb" from Linuxant... but it did not work with my modem version which is Conezant D480 MDC v.92
PCI CONFIGURATION INFORMATION READ:
VENDOR ID : 8086
DEVICE ID : 24C6
SUBVENDOR ID : 14F1
SUBDEVICE ID : 5422
REVISION ID : 03

This is why I am looking for a linux capable modem.

Sorry to hear you still have the same problem I do. Another thing that did not work for me: Buying a Bestdata external USB modem, 56USB-P. It's just another Conexant winmodem, as far as I can tell. I wasn't able to get it to work either, and I'm going to return it.

On a previous installation (on a machine with a serial port) I used a USRobotics external 56K fax/modem in Linux and it worked perfectly. I was hoping for this result with the Bestdata USB external, but no deal.

Good news. I have some preliminary information on this modem, and will be adding limited support to ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) in the next few weeks. Once this support is in place, the slmodem software should work.

I'll keep you posted.

If you have time, check out this post of mine. If you have any knowledge of this product, I would appreciate your input.

Unfortunately, I only have experience with devices on the Intel HD Audio bus.

This is limited to mainly audio chips, but there are several winmodems attached to this bus as well.

There are plenty of PCI serial modems that will work. None of them are cheap.

http://www.usr.com/education/modem4.asp has a list of their controller based serial modems.   If you look around on ebay you can find a used one for around 20.00 . New they start around 60.00. You can buy a serial to usb adapter or add a serial code for less than 10.00  and use an old external like a USR 33.6 fax sportster flashed to v92 [56k} . I have 2 of these and they are outstanding.  Another choice is USR's USB modem which you can find new for around 40.00 or 50.00 from USR.

Be careful buying USB modems as some are Windmodems and won't work in Linux. The one from USR will.

Winmodems which are in almost every computer since 2002 are nor really modems , they are software modems and the software is written for Windows. You can get a driver from Linuxtant for some of them for 20.00 or free if you can deall with 14.4 speed.

Dell has some Linux Modem software for cxt modems and that is why I came here to see if I can find if they have one for my dell machines.

Good luck
