Which version of Redhat are you using and what kind of drive is it?

To start you off, you need to check and make sure the BIOS is seeing the drive. If the BIOS can see the drive you're good. If it doesn't see the drive, the drive is either disconnected or defective (you'll need to try reconnecting it or calling tech support if this is the case).

If the drive is an IDE drive, you won't need any special software. IDE drives have a wide, flat cable coming out the back as well as a smaller white power plug. If it is a SATA drive, you'll need to make sure your version of Redhat supports SATA and specifically the chipset of your model. SATA drives have a small, flat, smooth cable that is about a half inch wide (1 cm) as well as a black power plug.

You might give Ubuntu or OpenSuse a try. The latest versions of both of these support SATA.

Hi
its a SATA drive its connected and all that
I have windows xp
Im trying to install red hat enterprise version 4
I have to install red hat as im installing a programming environment that is supported in linux  only by red hat
Now i am waiting on a copy of partition magic and maybe when i release some space the linux installation process may react differently
otherwise i may have to get a more up to date version of Red Hat

I have repartitioned my drive using Norton
giving me 75GB of space
I have disabled the USB device in the bios
which gives me the option to select a driver during the install procedure
i have tries every SATA driver on the list
I was trying 32bit install as the application software was 32 bit
but this machine supports 64bit so i tried the 64bit install
none of these have given me any job
is there any other bios settings i need to make ?
when i select the driver there an option to enter parameters, is there any i should try ?

Hi,

I have a similar problem, but even worse as I'm trying to use RED HAT 3. There is a driver at support.dell.es for this sata controller. It does not work under RH3 but perhaps it works under v4. Also I think RH4 update 1 include this driver.

I also have the same problem. I am trying to install redhat version 3 on  another  internal SATA hard disc SEAGATE 300 GB on dell xps 400. It gives the error no device detected error messages. Do you know whether there is any driver to install for this?

Hi, to have a precision380 working with sata drives, please install RHEL update6 or Update7.

Then you'll have it working in few minutes

Can i use Fedora which is available free . Someone said the latest version supports SATA. Is Fedora better than Red Hat Enterprise Linux  or what is advantage of redhat over Fedora, if  i am paying for redhat

Yes, but I tried with FC3 and it does not work. You should try FC4 or brand new FC5 instead. I thought you planned using RHEL. I think that RHEL has no large diferences from FC, If you pay, you have maintenance and help, you also can log to a network called RHN where your system is controled and updated almost automatically. However, If you don't need such a service FC is a good alternative.
