New XPS 13 Developers Edition

I just got my "New XPS 13 Developers Edition" laptop (model 9394), with Ubuntu Linux 14.04 pre-installed by Dell.

I thought I'd create a thread where new owners could discuss any issues we're having.

OK, I'll start.

Sometimes, the machine suspends and won't resume.

If I remember correctly, it doesn't happen when I suspend it explicity (i.e. from the menu on the top-right, or from the dialog box that comes up when I push the power button).

It only happens if the machine suspends due to inactivity.  I have mine set to suspend when inactive for 10 minutes.  And I have it turn off the screen when inactive for 5 minutes.  I have the lock-screen turned off.

Later, I try to wake the machine by pressing the power button.  The keyboard lights up, but the screen remains blank.  The only thing I can do is power the machine off by holding down the power button.

This is annoying.  I haven't lost any work yet, but it's a waste of time.

When the machine restarts, I get three dialog boxes asking if I want to submit crash information (to whom?  Ubuntu?  Not sure...).  I have submitted that several times.

The tool that reports the problem won't let me copy the text (what's that about?), but it says that the problem is in an executable named /usr/share/apport/apportcheckresume.  ProblemType=KernelOops.

Here's a work-around: In the Systems Settings tool, Brightness & Lock, set "Turn screen off when inactive for:" to Never.

So, apparently the bug is that if the screen is off and the system suspends, then resume doesn't turn the screen back on, and now there's no way to interact with the machine, except to restart it.

I dorked my install already playing around with dual boot.  Does Dell provide a restore image I can use to undo my boo boo?

I fixed the install and installed vanilla Ubuntu 14.04...but I have none of the right drivers.  How can I get my wireless working?  Thanks for the help all.

Yeah, the touchpad has problems.  My biggest issue is that it's difficult to click on something, because the "button" area at the bottom of the pad senses movement.  So as I put my finger in that area, the pointer moves and is no longer over the thing I'm trying to click!  I end up clicking nearby, which is usually nothing.  Probably half my clicks fail for this reason.

The driver should just ignore motion in the click area of the trackpad.

How do we report bugs and enhancement requests to Dell?  I don't see a mechanism.

Matt, regarding the Dell drivers, in the factory configuration, I see several software repositories that are specific to Dell.  I assume these contain the drivers you're looking for.

In the "Software & Updates" tool, "Other Software" tab, I see these repositories:

Binary http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates trusty-dell public

Source http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates trusty-dell public

Binary http://oem.archive.canonical.com/updates trusty-dell public

Source http://oem.archive.canonical.com/updates trusty-dell public

On the "Additional Drivers" tab, I see these drivers:

Intel oem-audio-hda-daily in DKMS format.

Broadcom Bluetooth firmware for DW1560

Broadcom BCM4352 802.11ac proprietary

I also have problems when trying to resume. I'm not sure but I think the length of time while suspended has something to do with it. If I suspend for a few minutes resume works.  I just don't have a time frame.

Try this if you can't resume:  ALT +SysRq (printScr) then type REISUB in caps.  This should cause a safe reboot.

Here's another problem with resume (separate from the blank screen problem).

Sometimes, I resume and the system is working fine, except that I can't get the wifi radio to turn on.  The Bluetooth radio connects to my mouse fine, but the wifi won't connect.  In fact, it doesn't even try to connect (scan).  It's as if the wifi hardware simply doesn't exist.  The menu from the icon (now an empty outline) in the system bar (at the top of the screen) is missing most items.  It just has "Enable Wi-Fi".  Selecting this does nothing.

Other times it resumes fine and re-connects the Wi-Fi.  I don't see a pattern to it.

Dell--again, how do I report these bugs to you?

I didn't had any problem with suspending/resuming, screen freezes sometimes but i change of tty and problem is solved.

And for reporting bugs I suppose that's the place.

Here (search for xps13 tag) I read some things at first, but now i find more here
