Optiplex 740 mouse and keyboard problem (Ubuntu 6.10)

Hi,

I managed to install ubuntu 6.10 amd64 (2.6.17-10-generic) on a new optiplex 740, I noticed that the mouse was freeze during the installation process, but it finish the install OK. On my first boot the mouse and keyboard hang after 1 min , dmesg give me an "invalid IRQ, Check your BIOS". I did upgrade the BIOS (1.0.5) and the system drivers (R135691.exe), but the problem continues. I think its a problem with the BIOS but I´m not sure.

I also tried to install Debian Etch amd64 but it didnt pass the network detection.

Ubuntu and Debian where able to boot with the option acpi=off.

Any suggestion on how to run Ubuntu or Debian on a Dell Optiplex 740???

Thanks.

I just got an Optiplex 740 here at work and am trying to get Linux installed on it. Fedora core 6 is my flavor, and am having all kinds of troubles of course. acpi=off is necessary, and the mouse freezes constantly. I see there's a new bios for this system posted 3.28/2007. I am hoping this is the fix we are both looking for. But I am trying to find out a good way to update the BIOS on this stupid box. No floppy drive and of course if you aren't running windows, Dell wants you to boot into a DOS environment and run the exe from there. Can't we get something a little more friendly when you don't have an OS on the system, or you are using a real OS?
