PRO Wireless 3945 compat w/ Insp 1501?

I recently purchased an Inspiron 1501 notebook with the intention of installing linux before Dell began sales of linux notebooks.

I thought I'd looked into it pretty thoroughly, but missed how poorly the Broadcom chips in the 1390 & 1490 wireless cards are supported in Linux.

It wasn't offered as an option during configuration, but does anyone have any idea if a refurbished Intel PRO 3945 card would be compatible with the Inspiron 1501 sporting an AMD processor & 0UW744 motherboard?

I ask because an Intel card with native linux drivers would be much preferable to the limitations that come with ndiswrapped drivers. Thanks for any help.

I have used Linux for a while and it has been my experience that in general Intel Wireless cards work mostly out of the box as where the broadcom ones require a more in depth and painstaking process.

The wireless cards should all be miniPCI, so I do not see why a separately-purchased Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 card would not work in your Inspiron 1501. Here's a little something you might find handy: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1501/en/sm_en/cards.htm#wp1015787

there was a problem with the current R151517.EXE. Instead I used R140747.EXE.

What tool in Ubuntu are you using to extract and install .exe files? I was only aware of programs such as WINE being capable of this

The problem is that my Insp 1501 notebook does not even boot up with an Intel PRO Wireless 3945 and I have tried 3 different functional Wifi cards already.

(black screen and all the LEDs are off except the Power LED) I believe there must be a switch or a jumper in somewhere or do I have to release the Broadcom WiFi from the Bios first?

P.s.: I did follow the http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1501/en/sm_en/cards.htm#wp1015787 guide, it's a good one.
