Problem installing Ubuntu 7.04

I got a CD with a version of Ubuntu 7.04 which I want to install in my Dell Dimension 5150. The problem is the PC does not boot from the CD. The CD has the file "ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.ISO", as far as I understand the PC should boot from this ISO file, am I doing anything wrong? Any help will be appreciated, thanks. Augusto

augusto_sf,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Did you go into the bios and set the cdrom as first boot device?

"The CD has the file "ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.ISO"" You need to burn the ISO. This will create a bootable disk. The ISO itself will not boot. See "BurningIsoHowto" at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto , or for a fuller explanation see "Downloading and burning an ISO of Ubuntu" at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso

It sounds like you burnt a "Data CD" rather than "Burn Image to Disc" (to use the terminology found in Nero StartSmart for example). If the disc only shows the one file when you view it, it is not going to work.

Dear, I have dell inspiron D6000, and I am using ubuntu 6.10. Now I would like to upgrade to 7.0.4 but I always got a message the following link is not connected and then I cannot upgrade. http://antesis.freecontrib.org/mirrors/ubuntu/plf/dists/breezy/Release.gpg Do you have any clues about this? Thanks for your help

Ubuntu 6.10 = Edgy Eft Ubuntu 7.04 = Feisty Fawn You are getting a message that you cannot update a link for Ubuntu 5.10 = Breezy Badger. Not surprising. Are you using Synaptic Package Manager? Lose this repository. For a good link about updating online see Upgrade Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) to Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) at http://onlyubuntu.blogspot.com/2007/03/upgrade-ubuntu-610-edgy-eft-to-ubuntu.html

Thanks for your helps I have just upgraded the Ubuntu, but I got one more problem. After I installed, and restarted, the gnome did not work. There was a message announced that ubuntu cannot recognize my video card ATI Mobility Radeon X300. Then I tried to use the comment sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to install the video card. After that, I could use gnome but the resolution is not good. I can see two desktops at the same time. Could you help me?

There was a recent kernel update so your video and specific card driver may have disappeared because of that. I would be tempted to try "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" again and choose VESA. I don't think that this command installs specific card drivers. If you have previously downloaded and saved the specific ATI driver then run it again so that it installs in the new kernel. If you don't have the specific ATI driver then according to the Unofficial Ubuntu Guide (at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Feisty#How_to_install_Graphics_Driver_.28ATI.29):

How to install Graphics Driver (ATI)
* See Unofficial ATI Linux driver wiki
* Or Ubuntuforums.org
* Or PenLUG.org

My new problem is connection to the internet. I have an Optus DSL broadband using a 4200 ADSL Modem. It seems to me that Ubuntu 7.04 doesn't recognise it. What can I do? (My machine is a Dell Dimension 5150). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Augusto

Can you, or did you, connect with Windows? Do you connect to the (Modem) Router by ethernet or USB? Does Gnome Network Manager show a connection or not?

Arochester, Thank you again for your help. When I boot into Windows Optus DSL connects automatically via USB with no problem. I usually reboot to go into Ubuntu but Ubuntu doesn't show any internet connection. The network manager shows the option 'wired connection' as on, and address: 'dhcp' but nothing else. When I try to connect to the internet via Mozilla I get the message: 'not connected to the internet'. Thanks for any help you can provide. Augusto

Can you try it with an ethernet cable? You should be able to get on quite cheap...

Arochester,
Thank you again for your help. I did connect the ADSL modem via the ethernet port and followed the instructions to set it up given in some of the Ubuntu links. Now my Ubuntu environment is connected to the internet! It is however interesting that Windows does not recognise the ethernet connection!
Cheers,
Augusto
