Problem with installing Redhat Entrerprise Linux 4 WS on Dimension 5150C

Hello everyone,

I ordered my Dell Dimension 5150C with Windows XP but I decided to use it for Redhat Entrerprise Linux 4 WS now.

I got the ISO images of RHEL burned on CD's and soon after firing up the installation in text mode a message appeared:

"No valid devices were found on which to create new file systems"

My local customer support could not really help and ushered me to this forum.

Following a hint on a Dell support forum, I changed the BIOS by setting SATA Operation to ATA (factory setting was AHCI) but on retry the same error message came up. SATA-0 and PATA-0 are both on by default, so I did not change them.

Can any one help please? I posted this message in the New Users forum but I got the advice it is at this forum that the chance for help should be better.

What type of SATA drive are you trying to install linux onto? I suppose that on boot of your installation disk, the kernel does not recognize your drive. Perhaps you should look at which drivers are on the installation CD and if yours isn't one of them and one exists and is available, you may be able to load it up via floppy, network, or some other media.

I'm having similar problem with WinXP w/SP2.  During installation, it does not recognize the hard drive.  Only available drivers are post installation...none for pre-installation.  It looks for TXTSETUP.OEM driver.

How do I install WinXP OS?

I'm having the same problem with a re-install of XP on a Dimension 5150c. We use Acronis SnapDeploy to image all new machines; on this particular machine the image completed successfully but will not boot. (The XP flash screen shows up, but the computer reboots from there. Won't boot in safe mode, either.)

So, I'm trying to format/install XP SP2 from scratch. Setup will not recognize that there is a hard drive installed. I tried downloading the SATA drivers from the Dell support site and loading SATA drivers manually, but I also get the "The file txtsetup.oem could not be found" error. Please help!
