X wasn't able to start. Mandrake probably was not able to figure out
what video driver to use. To see what errors it spit out, login at that console
then type startx.
Search on google using keywords linux and latitude d505. You will be able to find
someone who installed some flavor of linux on a d505 along with their
X configuration (the file /etc/X11/XF86Config* or /etc/X11/xorg.conf).
Make the necessary changes, then try startx again.
