Random lock ups with Dimension 8400
Here's my system specs:
Dimension 8400 - OEM except for:
20GB Maxtor IDE drive
Linksys WMP54G WLAN Card
..I'm also using the ATi Radeon X300 card, I believe that was an upgrade when I ordered my system. I completely wiped the system a year or so ago and installed Suse 10.0 to the SATA drive (160GB WD caviar) and XP to the 20GB drive. It was a hassle, but I got my wireless network card working with ndiswrapper and for awhile all was well (well, I've never been able to get DRI enabled, but more on that later).
All of a sudden one day the system started crashing. The freezes do not occur when I'm doing a certain task. Sometimes I will boot up, login and walk away for a bit and come back to a locked system (hard locked, not an X crash..the keyboard lights do not even change when I press the keys). This was my first linux install used in a home dekstop environment (really the first linux install I've actually used), and the OS had been through a number of botched program installations and upgrades (including messing with the Xorg drivers in an attempt to enable DRI) while I learned the ropes with linux. So knowing that I kind of just let it slide, and waited out for suse 10.1 so I could do a fresh install.
A few weeks ago I did a fresh install, and now the problem seems to be even worse. Literally within minutes of completion of the installation it crashed. This was before I had installed anything not in the OSS ISO and the add-on non-OSS disc... including NDISwrapper.
So now I really don't know where to go from here. My logs aren't of much use since nothing is written to them when it locks up. I've had the onboard LAN, serial, and parallel ports disabled in my BIOS (I don't use them). I've tested both my hard disks and the memory, and everything checks out fine. I'm almost positive it's hardware related, since it crashed immediately after a fresh install on more than one occasion (with Suse RC's). Sometimes it will stay up for days without problems, sometimes it crashed right after I finish the log in process..never during boot though (yet).
Anyone have any thoughts?
