Redhat 8 (2.4.14-18) and Broadcom modems (x42112)
hello
i have recently installed a redhat 8 on my new dell comp, dual boot'in with winxp, and i found out that my Broadcom 42112 modem is not found by Redhat now i know that broadcom 42112 is a controllerless winmodem, so i need a linux driver for it, and i have found drivers from dell, that work for Redhat 7.2-3 but i also know that i need an EXACT kernel version. so my question is, does ANYBODY know where i can find a driver for a BCM42112 modem for Redhat 8? or i do i have to buy ANOTHER modem? i don't want to pay like 90 dollars for a real fricken modem if i can get around it.
thanks
julius caesar
ps: if worst comes to worst i can steal my friends modem that i think is being supported by a redhat 8 driver, conexant something-or-other. i still have that d@mn disc you people gave me, "Drivers and Utilities", but i don't know if it will work on a win me installation, i will have to swap my card for his and reintstall his on mine and mine on his but it has to work for me on both OS's and mine has to work on his for win me!!!!!

Hi
I have similar problem with Broadcomm modem. I upgraded my Poweredge 600SC from Linux 7.3 to Linux 8.0 and my modem stopped working.
Did you have any luck with your modem driver? Please help.
The following are details:
dmesg output says...
Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT
SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI ISAPNP enabled
ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
Redundant entry in serial pci_table. Please send the output of
lspci -vv, this message (14e4,4212,1028,0001)
and the manufacturer and name of serial board or modem board
to serial-pci-info@lists.sourceforge.net.
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 31.
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?

to replace the 2.4.9 kernel references with 2.4.18-14. Upon trying to build the
binary .rpm (rpmbuild -bb spec.file), the compilation of lkvi.c dies while processing
header files ("missing binary operator"). I sent an email to the developer
mentioned in the source (luisgm@broadcom.com) a couple of days ago, but haven't
received a reply yet.
I suppose I can turn up the verbosity on the compiler preprocessing in an attempt
to determine what's going wrong, but I'm not certain it will help. In any case,
I'm not going to change a kernel header file to suit lkvi.c, and I don't think I
know enough about the BCMSM driver to make any unmonitored changes there.
Assistance would be appreciated!

I was just wondering if Dell or Broadcom is in the process of helping us or we're dumped...
Thanks

I was able to compile the above BCM kernel module for the 2.4.18-27 kernel that is the latest update to the RedHat 8.0 systems. In summary, the BroadCom modem now works with my RedHat 8.0.
The binary and source RPMs, with instructions to build drivers for future kernel releases are available from my home page.
(Note: No warranties on these RPMs, use at your own risk! I am simply providing you the RPMs that worked on my system. I am glad to help.)

Note-2: I updated the drivers for providing the latest kernel and kernel-independent versions.

I used the rpm on your website and was able to go online today.
Thanks for posting the rpm.

I have just installed Redhat 7.3 and updated to kernel 2.4.18-24.7 via the redhat network (on a Dell 2600). I too have the Broadcom modem, and am having trouble installing the linux drivers.
Can you give me some clues as to how you got the drivers working with 2.4.18-14, so that hopefully I can make the equivalent changes to the BCM source rpm for my linux version. Thanks

I followed your instructions but I had to modify the Makefile since
the "make rpm ..." command complained about files that where not packed into the rpm.
So before you run "make rpm..." make these changes:
diff MakeFile Makefile.old
282c282
< --buildroot=$(RPM_BUILD_ROOT)2 \
---
> --buildroot=$(RPM_BUILD_ROOT) \
this instructs rpmbuild to have buildroot as buildRPM2. I'm not really sure how this works, but it does.
I'm using the modem right now to post this. Great!

Spent about 5 hours on this.. mandrake 9.2, I did the RPM thing, and got the mknod error.. (there is nothing in /proc/devices with BCMSM or anything like it in there so the major number for mknod is not found.
ok, so tried another tact.. installed an older 3.2 GCC and compiled and installed the tarball from scratch...
lol, took me about an hour and got me to exactly the same place.. mknod errors.
So I am about to give up.. broadcom bites the big one.
If I could figure out why the hardware doesn't show up in /proc/devices, I could probably get this thing going.
any ideas?
