You can boot using one of the live cds and use gparted/parted to resize partition.

I tried to do so with the gparted\parted app on the live session but I can`t manage to get the space in my partition (it doesn`t see the free and not partionned space right before the ext3 partition). I really don` know what to do

Have you tried the latest Gparted live cd (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php)?
Maybe you used an old version, or partition magick damaged up your partition table.

I would advise you to go to Ontrack's website as I've used their software for years and they are high end professional software developers which are focused on Hard drive software. You simply boot to their Cdrom disk and it will find all your hard drives, display all information, show partitioned and you can make any partition disappear or repartition the drive however you want, no issues, easy to use software. It will allow you to format using whatever you like and tell you when to install your OS disk to make your disk bootable. They really have some really nice software not too expensive considering it's very serious professional utility program.

thanks for the help, but I simply erased my linux partition so that I can merge the free space and the old linux partition.  I take note of your advice they should be great help next time I have issues about that.

ps : for gparted/parted, I can't know which version I tried, but I was on the Ubuntu feisty liveCD

For future reference. When you are partitioning your hard drive, set it up using LVM. This allows you to resize partitions. If you have a desktop with multiple hard drives LVM is helpful because it lets you mount /home on multiple drives. LVM can also be used almost like RAID. Just my .02.
