running something else (os) on Inspiron 7500

Good day,

I have a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop and am considering installing a different operating system on it  The unit came with W98 installed as the default, but I want to move away from Windows. Maybe Linus or even Freedos lost interesting.  Where I am having an issue is with the hardware.  The unit came with the CDROM and the 3.5 floppy as one "removable" unit (or single unit).  It works fine when with the Dell drivers for Windows, but what about other operating systems?  Is this drive a standard 'IDE' type meaning generic drivers I find will work?  Also, what about the modem and sound card, will generic drivers work here too?

If anyone has ever converted a Inspiron 7500 from Windows OS to something else, please feel free to contact me or anyone who might be able to help.

Thanks,

Hi foxfire337,

The Media bay on the laptop which holds the CD-ROM + floppy drive works on IDE technology. Dell doesn’t have any drivers for other operating systems except Windows 98 and 2000 for Inspiron 7500. There are a lot of forums on Internet which answers your queries on Linux and other operating systems, I may suggest you to research about this before going ahead and changing the Operating system.

Please let us know in case of any queries

Thanks and regards
