1.0: What you are looking for is the correct video card driver. Before anybody can help you, you need to tell us what video card you have in your machine -- Intel? NVidia? ATI? (pray that it is not ATI). You'll need to provide the model number.

2.0: See answer to 1.0.

3.0: Go to the package manager (I don't know where they keep it in GNOME -- I think it is called "synaptic." From there, you can install "kde-desktop" to get KDE and then you will be able to switch between GNOME and KDE. HOWEVER, be warned! -- this could cause you serious headaches. Do NOT do this unless you are willing to put up with some problems and manually fix problems that arise. GNOME and KDE are two very different desktop environments with their own sets of applications and interface guidelines. They are not simply GUI skins. Better to download the Kubuntu LiveCD and boot up to that (without installing to your harddrive) so you can play around with it and see how you like it and then choose one or the other. Keep in mind, if you decide to switch to KDE, Dell only supports Ubuntu -- the one with GNOME -- and only on systems that they preinstalled it on.

to question 1:

As far as i can see with the AIDA32 program It's:

Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family

It's a integrated displaydriver to my notebook.

GREAT! That means that installing the proper driver is easier than falling off a log. :) Open your package manager (Synaptic) and install 915Resolution. Reboot. Done. :)

I use Kubuntu with KDE... so I don't know where it is in Gnome. You can hunt around in the menus on your gnome desktop or google for it. I honestly don't know ANYTHING about the Gnome desktop.

As far as "is it easy to find" -- I think once you see Synaptic, you'll find that was a silly question. ;)

It sounds so easy :D

Open your package manager (Synaptic) -- Where is that / how do i do that?

and install 915Resolution -- is it easily found?

I have just installed Ubuntu v7.04 on my Latitude X1. I want to download the correct screen-driver and install it. My question is: 1.0 I can't choose Ubuntu in the "operating system" menu under the download-driver-section. What to choose then? 2.0 My desktop-resolution is default 1024*768 but the latitude x1 has a wide-screen monitor. But i can't choose any other than the 1024*768 resolution when i go to the desktop-resolution-menu. How do i change that?? 3.0 I have just been told that there is GNOME and KDE desktop environments. Can i switch between those? And How?

Answer to question 3: Click on System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager.
Once there, click on Reload, then Search, and type "kubuntu-desktop". Click on the white square and then on Mark for install. Click on Apply and further confirmation buttons. It will download a bunch of files, and do the installation by itself.

When it announces finish, then close the X session. On the login screen choose KDE as session option and, voilà!, you are on KDE. I know, because I just did that.

Well...

I have chosen to format all my harddrives once more and restore an copy of my WinXP with Northon Ghost. I fixed the MBR with my windows oem CD (typed "fixmbr").

Now i have installed Kubuntu and facing the same screen-size problems as i mentioned in my first post... I have tried to install the 915Resolution but still i cannot change the display from 1024*768 to 12xx*768.

1.0 how do i install and change the displaysize in KDE?

2.0 What is the name of a small text-program for small messages? (similar to the notepad ind windows)

3.0 Can i use the Firefox Browser in KDE? And how is it installed?

4.0 Can i use the GNOME Messengerservice in KDE? If yes - how is it installed?

Thorun:

I'm not exactly sure I understand the new problem -- did you install 915resolution and you are still unable to get the proper resolution or are you having difficulty installing 915resolution? If the problem is installing 915resolution, in KDE, you'll use Adept Manager to install it. Go to the KMenu -> System -> Adept Manager. As before using synaptic, request install, apply changes, reboot and done! (if that wasn't the problem, let me know and I'll try again. :) )

Just In Case (but probably not necessary)
If you don't see 915resolution in the list, you'll need to open the adept menu in Adept Manager and open Manage Repositories. Under the Kubuntu Software tab, make sure you have "Canonical-supported", "Community-maintained", "Proprietary drivers", and "Sofware restricted by copyright" clicked. You should then fetch updates again and 915resolution will be there

2.0: kate - you'll find it in KMenu -> Utilities

3.0: Yes. Just install it using Adept Manager

4.0: I don't know what that is, but you can install it, as with nearly all software, using Adept Manager -- I use several Gnome applications on my KDE desktop. There may be a KDE equivalent already installed, but as I said, I don't know GNOME Messenger Service is, so I can't point you to it. Is it an Instant Messaging type program? If so, try Kopete in the KMenu -> Internet menu.

Hi again.

Thank you for the reply.

I did many things in a wery short time period today. I decided to get back to Ubuntu and Gnome. And now my desktop is the correct size 1280x768 pixels.
Now i have made some things work in gnome, and have tried out some of the stuff.
My next project is therefore:

1. Get Java installed as a plugin in Firefox in Gnome
(possibly with Automatix)

2. Get KDE installed on my ubuntu - so i can switch between those two desktop environments - learning them both to know better.

Again thankyou for your replys. I will use the info with adept manager tomorrow when i get the KDE (kubuntu) installed on the Ubuntu-kernel.

You can do this with either Synaptic (under Gnome) or Adept Manager (under KDE). There is no need for Automatix. Look for sun-java6-plugin. Just selecting that will pull in all the dependencies it needs.

I guess you could go to www.mozilla.com and get interesting plug-ins there, including this one.

2. Get KDE installed on my ubuntu - so i can switch between those two desktop environments - learning them both to know better.

Yes, kubuntu-desktop, I have been switching between KDE and Gnome. It is cool, because you can use KDE games on Gnome and vice-versa.
