I should mention, btw, that there are MANY low cost printers made by HP, Epson, Brother and others, that work VERY well in Linux. The problem is not with Linux, but with the few manufacturers (like Lexmark, who manufactures Dell printers) who make these cheap host controlled printers (cheap as in quality -- as I said, other companies make very good low-cost printers that work in Linux).
Most Dell printers are not compatible with Linux. See
OpenPrinting (formerly linuxprinting.org) to find out if your Dell printer is one of the ones that works with Linux or not.
Also, Linux users cannot use Canon printers. They have stated that they will not support Linux at all! So, don't buy a Canon. They r teh greedys! (Sorry if I sound bias!)
