That's an interesting work around, but the issue is with getting the proper Dell specific kernel. When you upgrade your dist. you also have to go in and manually change your Dell specific repositories in Synaptic to reflect the change. That will get you the right kernel version with a working wireless stack.

Thanks,

I'd like to get it "right".

I tried working w the link you suggested, before I stumbled on the kernel change solution.

But, in   /etc/apt/sources.list  I see nothing about PPA or launchpad or dell.

Like I said I'm not very Linux wise, any suggestions appreciated.

Jason,

Thanks for clarifying how to do that.

I did as you suggested, something happened as it took a while to upgrade, but, I’m not seeing any working changes.

I tried booting w the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel, but still the same, no sound or wireless.

Still the same w the 2.6.22-15-generic, no wireless or backlight after resume from suspend, but all seems to be fine before suspend.

Strixy said: “When you upgrade your dist. you also have to go in and manually change your Dell specific repositories in Synaptic to reflect the change. That will get you the right kernel version with a working wireless stack.”

I don’t know what that means, but I’m off to Synaptic to see what I can learn.

I found this post: "Actually, the kernel is 2.6.24-19 generic and you must install the linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-19 generic using Synaptic to have the Wireless LED runing (and linux-backports-modules-hardy, linux-backports-modules-hardy-generic as well)." [Thanks arverne]

Reckon that's at least part of what strixy was suggesting.

Anything else to be added??????

I am now able to run 2.6.24-19 generic, have wireless and backlight at boot and at resume from suspend.

Only issue I'm seeing now is no sound.
