Sound Issues with RedHat9 and Dimension 8200

I've just started messing around with Linux, I'm using Red hat 9. Anyways my problem is with my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard. Red hat detects the chipset fine and everything, but the thing is, I get no sound through my speakers! The headphone jack on the front of my computer works fine, and if I plug some simple unpowered speakers into one of the speaker out jacks on the back of the card, that works too. But my Altec Lansing speakers do not work. I have a Dell Dimension 8200, and the way that the speakers hook up is through this Y-Adapter that plugs into a "versa-jack". The speakers use a RCA plug, so the only way I can plug it into the soundcard is with the Y-Adapter. I've tried every combination of plugging them in, into different jacks, different y-adapter ends everything. I've also tried all the combinations of speaker settings, from Dolby Digital to Pro Logic to stereo. A friend of mine has the exact same setup, and his sound worked right after the install. I'm all out of ideas!! I've also downloaded the ALSA modules, but I'm not sure if they are working properly. I just ran the RPMS from freshrpms, and that was it.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!! Kinda getting sick of headphones!
Thanks in advance!

I have Mandrake 9.2 in my Dell Dimension 8200.At first I didn't have any sound.I found the volume level was too low/soft at default setting.I use ALSA driver now also and the sound is better than Turtle Beach's XP driver for Santa Cruz.It is the best PC sound I have had since Win 98SE with Montego II card.I'm not using the Altec Lansing speakers so can't help you much there but there are a few volume controls all over the system.Maybe try turning them all up in the PC.I thnk there were a couple of BIOS fixes for that speaker set in the 8200.Maybe a later BIOS instead of the BIOS patch for them.I have an early 8200 from Dec,2001.1.9 Ghz P4 now using BIOS AO9.

figured it out:

1)alsa mutes everything--to unmute in alsamixer...type 'M' on each channel...the "MM" about each channel says it's muted in alsamixer

2)i don't think i actually used alsaconf (although i'm not sure)

3)be sure the correct devices are in the /dev directory...i think you have to run alsa's sounddevices (or snddevices or something like that)

4)./configure for the intel-8x0 device (use the proper "--" option)
