Sound problem - Fedora Linux on Inspiron 600m

I recently installed FC4 on i600m. The sound card is being recognized and the headphones work OK, but I can get no sound out of the laptop speakers. The master, PCM and speaker controls on alsamixer are all turned up. Sound works fine under Windows. Any idea where the problem could be?

What type of sound card do you have?  If it is an intel on board one, you may need to go to intel's website and download any additional sound drivers for it to work properly.

More importantly when you say no sound, do you mean no sound period or no sound when you run cd or dvd?

Thanks for your reply. I have Intel Centrino technology with the 855 chipset, and the sound card that's included therein. There are no linux drivers for that on the Intel website (except for USB 2.0 support, which is included with all recent Linux kernels). The system recognizes the sound card as "Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio controller", snd-intel8x0. When I say there is no sound, I mean no sound at all, not just when playing CDs or DVDs. But I remind you that I do get sound out of the headphones.

Never mind - I solved it: The "external amplifier" control on ALSAMIXER should be on, too. I wonder why, is that some problem with Dell's hardware?
