Ubuntu 18.04 and thunderbolt dock
Hello,
suddenly my thunderbolt dock stopped working in a weird way:
- when i connect it to my laptop (dell xps 15) ubuntu still makes a sound
- when the dock is connected and i press the dock button i still get prompted if i want to reboot or shut down my laptop
- when i connect the dock, i still see the video going black a couple times as it used to do before
- from the ubuntu settings, under thunderbolt i have Direct Access turned on and a cable being tuned on.
But still: no usb, audio or screen is working from the dock anymore.
Does anyone have any pointer?
thanks

I had a similar issue with my Thunderbolt dock on Ubuntu 18.04, and I know how frustrating it can be. It seems like the dock is partially detected but not fully functional. Based on my experience, here are some steps you can try:
Check Thunderbolt Authorization:
Make sure your dock is authorized under the Thunderbolt settings in Ubuntu. Go to
Settings > Thunderboltand confirm if the dock is listed as trusted. If not, try authorizing it again.Install or Update Drivers:
Thunderbolt devices often require specific drivers. You can check for updates using:
Then restart your system and see if the dock works.
Inspect Kernel Logs:
Use the following command to look for any Thunderbolt-related errors in the system logs:
This might give you clues about what’s failing.
Reset BIOS Settings:
Sometimes, BIOS settings for Thunderbolt can cause issues. Check your laptop’s BIOS and ensure Thunderbolt security levels are set to "No Security" or "User Authorization."
Try Another Kernel Version:
If you recently updated Ubuntu, the new kernel might be causing compatibility issues. You can try booting with an older kernel from the GRUB menu or install a new kernel version.
Additionally, while resolving this issue, if you're also working with Docker, this guide on Install Docker on Ubuntu is very helpful for setting up Docker smoothly.
Let me know how it goes or if you need more assistance!
