ubuntu installation

hello folks. i got two partitions in my HD. one for win98 and one for win xp. i want to install ubuntu where the win 98 is located. if i do that, can i still get the boot selection(a point where you're going to choose which OS you want to start) or not?

you can use the grub bootloader, which, if i remember correctly, ubunutu will install it without your knowledge. it is also supposed to be able to autoconfigure everything for you.

if you wish to use the windows bootloader, then i believe there is an option during install that you can tell it to not install grub, but then you need to modify the windows boot.ini file as well as create a small file in windows that will point to the linux partition (a total pain).

In one of my Dell forum postings I could not type the word "L-A-W" in.The Dell site wouldn't accept the word"L-A-W".I see that the Dell site is hacked. It could be that Dell does not even know that this site exists. There is no official Dell tech presence here. What company would have a site where deep and technical computer problems are solved by non-employes?If you want to try Linux try VMWare.I do not see that Dell even knows about Linux on their site.Linux does not work!

You most certainly can install ubuntu on the Win 98 partition. If you just select that partition during setup ubuntu will do it all for you. When you select Win XP during grub boot, it may then go to the original XP/98 boot menu you are used to. Not a problem--as long as you don't select Win 98. You will get an error and have to restart. Happened to a friend of mine when he installed 6.10. Apparently the boot menu that XP sets up is too stupid to realize Win 98 has been blown away. There are fixes for this, but you need to do them before you install Linux. If you go poking around in the Windows boot tables after installing Linux, Winblows will be happy to take access to freedom away.

@Balthor, This site is run by Dell. Its called a Community Forum, its for members to work out their problems together. L-A-W is blocked because people have posted threads about filing a L-A-W- **S-U-I-T against Dell. Dell wants this to be a tech-related problem only site.

The truth is that you are not in reality a Dell tech.

I never claimed that I was! You assumed I was, then found out I was not. Dell's are the same as any other computer. Just a different case.

To save your self some possible headaches remove windows98 first then go to this site http://www.cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/wubi/en-US/index.html It is a program that will install Ubuntu for you. It installs like a standard windows program with easy to follow instructions. You will need a broadband connection since it installs Ubuntu from the internet. With some patience you can be dualbooting windows Xp and ubuntu in about 2 hrs, depending on your internet speed. I installed it in my 2.23ghz dell dimension desktop fine, it recognized all the hardware. By the way you need at least 6 gig free space to do this :-)
