Unix and Linux

  Dear forum members,

Cany any ones of you that are knowledegeble tell me about unix and linux operating systems.  Would it be advisable or even doable to download one of these systems to my windows based pc just to try it out.  How much work and risk would be involved in this?   Presently I have a Dell 4550 with WinXP home ed.

Jim4mor,

It is very easy to try Linux out on your machine, there are several distrobustions that supply a live cd. What this allows you to do is boot of the CD to try the system out. If you like it you would need to repartition your hard drive and make room for Linux to be installed.

A few Live Cd's are

Fedora project

Ubuntu

Long list of Live Cd's FreeBSD and others

If you need more information let me know.

Thanks.

Personally I will suggest you to try Ubuntu (currently is 7.10), which is easy to use and have a lot of eyes candy stuff.
If you need any help, there are many topic going around at the web, so just search, so not too hard to learn.
Just download the live CD and try it out, if you like it, then only install it.
